Travelling on a canal barge is a calm and relaxing experience as it meanders through the Kildare countryside. Away from roads and immersed in nature the stresses of work quickly disappear. But it also requires skill to pilot the barge and ingenuity and elbow grease to master the workings of a canal lock!

medium-IAE_Kildare_Sallins_GrandCanal_BargeTrip_IMG_6069_LMUnder supervision each participant takes their turn at the tiller and pilots the barge. After their turn they hand over skipper duties to the next person and stay with them and show them what they’ve learned until they are comfortable on the tiller. Participants are divided into Lock Teams for each lock encountered on the route. Using a diagram and basic written instructions, the Lock Teams have to figure out how to do it! The entire crew gets involved as skippers, rope handlers and lock operators. It’s fun, enjoyable and combines a relaxing rural experience with real teamwork and activity.

There is an awards ceremony with boaty trinket prizes at the end of the activity in Lock 13 Gastro Pub where participants can enjoy a meal and a Craft Beer Tasting Session. Scores are allocated for individual and team performance and everyone gets a prize!

A Licensed Barge Skipper is on-board for the duration of the cruise and there is lock-keeper supervision.medium-IAE_Kildare_Sallins_GrandCanal_BargeTrip_IMG_6199_LM
