McCreevy’s Lock Cruise

Liquid History to McCreevy’s Lockfamily in lock

Who would have thought the Grand Canal would help to satisfy the thirsts not only of Dubliners but also of people right around the world?

Cruising along in our barge to McCreevy’s Lock, you soon find there’s a “Morell” to this tale too. The River Morell, to be exact, and skipper Ger Loughlin will regale you with the story of how linking the canal to the river brought a supply of clear water to a thirsty, growing city.

interior 5Turning around at the lock (with anecdotes of its ties to former Irish politician Charlie McCreevy), you’ll see the legacy of the waterworks.

Then hear how a certain Arthur Guinness and his family made the most of the fresh Morell water supply to their Dublin brewery, expanded operations and used the canal to transport their beer far and wide: the rest, as they say, is history.

After a tipple at the bar on board our barge, what better way to begin an evening out in Sallins?
